Second ZEF-WASCAL-PAUWES training workshop on development of Energy in Africa

A two weeks duration workshop was organized in Niamey at the WASCAL Master Research Program on Climate Change and Energy (MRP CC &Energy). The workshop brought together students of the Pan African University - Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (PAUWES) working on energy related issues –engineering or policy issues and their counterparts of the WASCAL MRP CC & Energy, focusing on the same topics. The workshop was facilitated and conducted by lecturers and scientists from the WASCAL region and from Niger.

Workshop activities (except for field trips) were held on the premises of the MRP CC & Energy building on the University Abdou Moumouni campus.

Sekoukou 2nd visit for WAC-SRT Students

The visit to Sekoukou happened on Saturday 29th December 2018, a demonstration site of WAC-SRT.

The aim of the visit was to assess the advancement state of water extension project and participate in the school garden project implementation. As planned, we arrived around 10 AM and were received by the village officials and the school director.

We went directly to the landscaped area. Once on the field, the following were noticed:

Ø the realization of 70 boards on 600 m2 (with a wire fence)

Ø supply of organic matter on the boards

Ø availability of seedlings for transplanting (tomatoes, lettuce, onions, carrots, cabbage). However, only the tomato was acquired.

The team was involved in the rehabilitation and burying of manure on some boards as an example. In addition, some technical advice was given taking into account their know-how in the field, for the purpose of a good implementation of the garden.

Subsequently, the visit continued on the point of extension of the drinking water supply to GAOBOREYDO hamlet where it remains the fence and the lighting. However, the extension to FANDOGA neighborhood is planned for the future.

At the end of this visit, which ended at around 12.30, it was promised to the gardening team a technical guide for market gardening, a copy of which will be attached to this report.

Trasdiciplinarity for Sustainable Rural, Transformation in West Africa

USD WA CAMPPUS, BAMAHU, TAMALE- GHANA; 1st - 30th June 2019

The West African School for Sustainable Rural Transformation took place in WA campus of the University for Development Studies from 3rd of June to 29th June. It brought together students form three post graduate programs that are under the sponsorship of the DAAD. This month long program was aimed at opening network opportunities for young scholars to learn the experiences and viewpoints of different people from different backgrounds. The program was a mix of both academic and social events. The students were drawn from the MPhil program in Development Management in WA Campus, MPhil Agriculture Economics from Nyankpala campus and Integrated Master Program in Sustainable Rural Transformation from Abodou Moumouni University in Niamey, Niger. The tutors and lecturers were also a mix of experts from diverse fields and from the different institutions. To give students a practical overview of how rural transformation is carried out, resource persons from the NGO field and personnel from the district assembly planning departments presented their works

Various themes were explored for the purpose of instilling in students the desire to champion rural transformation within the West African context. The first week of the program featured the theme: Introduction to Sustainable Development and Rural Development. Several courses were taught that centered on the various dimensions and practices of sustainable development/transformation. This week also witnessed a resources person from an NGO called CIKOD (Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development). The facilitator gave insights into the operations of the organization. CIKOD is engaged in the areas of food sovereignty, endogenous institutional support, eco WASH and agro ecology. The organization also deals in other crosscutting themes such as gender and generational inequality, governance and advocacy and knowledge management.
